We recently had the opportunity to work with a library. One task was to make new labels to mark the front of their serials collection, both the paper and the fiche materials.
The current issues (paper publications) were marked with labels that contained the same basic information, but which had been typed in different formats.
The labels were functional, but not very glamorous; creating a new label format was one of those “hidden” deliverables that Werecat provides in the course of fulfilling any contract.
Well, actually, we all do. When we are looking for information from different sources, it is
easier if it is in the same format from source to source. That’s why we fill out forms for things like
insurance claims, expense reports and new account applications. To make it easier and more efficient for the
people who need to process the information to do their job.
On a purely functional level, using a consistent label
format would improve the library patrons’ ability to get the information they
need to find the materials they are looking for. Aesthetically, it would provide a more “modern” appearance to the
serials shelves; our modern eye interprets uniformity as technical or modern.
Not only do On Screen Label Forms create labels that look
great, and improve readability, they also provide a number of additional
features that make them a wonderful process improvement:
The library also had binders containing fiche copies of
older serials, which also benefited from a “label makeover.”
So if On Screen Label Forms will improve readability,
decrease preparation time and look great, why don’t companies already use them?
Because On Screen Label Forms require knowledge that many administrative staff members don’t have, and it is not the kind of project that technical staff members have the experience to develop.
Werecat provides state of the art solutions to everyday,
practical situations, getting the most out of your computer investment. And since we train your staff in the
functionality of the tools developed, we ensure that they will be better
equipped to create their own innovative solutions as new opportunities for
improvement arise.
